Measure the room and the way in

Measure the wall or corner where the piece will go, then check the listed width, depth and height against it. Leave about 30 inches for walkways, and room to open doors and pull out drawers all the way. Then measure the route in: the front door, hallways, stairs and any tight turns. Flat-packed furniture usually gets through easily, but large boxes can still be heavy and awkward.

Storage cabinets, sideboards and dressers

Start with what you'll store. Shoes, linens, dishes and kids' toys each need a different mix of shelves, drawers and doors. Adjustable shelves make a cabinet easier to reuse later. For drawers, look for metal runners rather than plain wood slides, and check whether the listing gives a weight limit per shelf or drawer.

Check the material line in each listing. Most affordable furniture is made from engineered wood such as particleboard or MDF with a laminate or veneer finish. That's fine for everyday storage, but it doesn't like standing water or being dragged across the floor, so lift pieces when you move them and wipe spills quickly.

TV stands and coffee tables

A TV stand should be wider than the TV, ideally by a few inches on each side, and rated for its weight. Check the stand's weight limit in the listing, not just the screen size it's styled with. If you have a console, a soundbar or a cable box, look for open shelves or doors with cable holes, so you don't have to run cords over the back.

For a coffee table, a common rule is about two-thirds the length of the sofa, with 14–18 inches between the table and the seat. Lift-top tables and ones with drawers add storage, which helps in small living rooms.

Home office desks

A standard desk height is about 29–30 inches. A standing desk lets you change position during the day, but check its height range against your own height and the motor's weight limit. If you'll use two monitors, measure the depth too: a shallow desk puts the screens too close to your eyes.

Anchor tall furniture

Dressers, tall cabinets and bookcases can tip over if a child climbs on them or several drawers are open at once. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends anchoring furniture and TVs to the wall, especially in homes with young children.
