KaerWorld is the online store for KAER, a brand that has made steel cabinets and safes since 2007. Its range runs from slim 2–4 rifle safes to 18–21 gun cabinets, plus biometric, fireproof and drop safes. Prices on its site start at about $180 for the smallest rifle safe and go past $1,000 for the big fireproof models, so it pays to know what you need before you pick one.
Start with what you'll store
The gun count on the box is a best case. It usually assumes rifles without scopes, packed side by side. Scoped rifles, shotguns with wide stocks, and cases or bags take up much more room. A good rule is to count what you own now, add what you expect to buy, and then choose a safe rated for more than that.
Think about the extras too. Handguns, ammunition, documents, and hunting gear all compete for space. KAER's 1400MD, for example, holds 10–12 long guns and has interior pockets for smaller items, while the 1320 is a narrow 2–4 rifle cabinet for a closet or small room.
Biometric, keypad or key?
- Keypad. You enter a code. It's quick, it works for everyone you share the code with, and it doesn't depend on a clean, dry finger.
- Biometric (fingerprint). It's the fastest when it reads well, and you don't have to remember a code. Register more than one finger, and test it with cold or wet hands before you rely on it.
- Backup key. Most electronic safes include one in case the battery dies or the electronics fail. Store it somewhere secure that isn't inside the safe.
Several KAER safes combine two of these, such as fingerprint plus keypad, and some sound an alarm after repeated wrong codes. Whatever you choose, change the factory code on day one and replace the batteries on a schedule.
What fire ratings mean
Fire ratings are where safes are hardest to compare. A rating like "30 minutes at 1200°F" describes the outside temperature and how long the safe lasted, but the result also depends on how hot it got inside and who did the test. The independent benchmark is UL 72, which certifies how long a safe keeps its inside below a set temperature, for example 350°F for paper.
KAER lists fire ratings of 30 or 40 minutes at 1200°F for its fireproof models, but its site doesn't say how these were tested. If fire protection is a key reason you're buying, ask KAER about the test before you order, and keep irreplaceable papers in a separate UL-rated fire box or a bank deposit box.
Steel, bolts and anchoring
A safe that isn't bolted down can be tipped over, pried open on its back, or carried out. Bolt it to the floor, or to the wall if the floor won't allow it, using the pre-drilled holes most gun safes have. Put it in a corner or closet, so there's little room to get a pry bar behind the door.
Steel thickness and the number of locking bolts matter, but compare them carefully, because brands describe them in different ways. A lighter cabinet keeps kids and casual visitors out; it won't stop someone with tools and time.
Store guns safely
Project ChildSafe, the safety program of the firearms industry's trade group, recommends storing guns unloaded in a locked safe or cabinet when you're not using them, keeping ammunition locked up separately, and making sure no one can get to them without your permission. A cable lock is a good extra layer, but not a replacement for a safe.
Delivery and setup
Gun safes are heavy, so check the weight and size before you order, measure doorways and stairs, and plan who will move it. KAER's 1320 rifle safe arrives pre-assembled, while its modular safes are put together at home. KaerWorld advertises 30-day returns and a 2-year warranty, but returning a heavy safe is a hassle, so read the terms first. See the KaerWorld deals page for current offers.
Frequently asked questions
How many guns will a KAER safe really hold?
Usually fewer than the number on the box. Capacity ratings assume rifles without scopes, so buy a safe rated for more than you own now.
Is a biometric gun safe better than a keypad safe?
Neither is better for everyone. Fingerprint locks are fast when they read well; keypads are more consistent. Many KAER safes offer both, plus a backup key.
Are KAER safes UL-rated for fire?
KAER lists fire ratings such as 30 or 40 minutes at 1200°F, but doesn't say how they were tested. Ask before you buy if fire protection matters to you.
